Graphic novel and Scene Description

The second portion of the graphic novel: The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is more to my liking than the first part. The reason is the way that images are used more fluently to tell the story of what is happening., Like I had said in my previous post that, to me makes something better,  Because it gives the reader (or viewer since pictures are seen) the ability to think for himself and be able to understand the picture. This makes the graphic that much more intense. One of the things that I noticed was the way that a ghost was used to portray Dr. Jekyll. This was my favorite part since we were able to see how Dr. Jekyll science had advance. He said he was able to have reached the mystic and transcendental. This part made me smirk because it was just cool to see how he was able to achieve that. However I did understand that it was just a book and it was not real. Imagery is a very important part of the graphic novel and it gives it that extra touch to make the reader more enthusiastic about the novel. All of the images are very descriptive with how they are represented and are able to show exactly what they are trying to tell the reader. Some of my favorite scenes come from the part where he has to start putting his pleasures aside so he started to conceal, since we are actually able to see that Hyde Is affected by the thought of Intercourse. It is very enticing even though it is only 5 slides you can say, it depicts the sadness and anguish that this brought to Jekyll. I think the part that the reader gets the most is when he says that years later he had realized he was leading a double life. This is that part that even caught me in the graphic Novel. Another aspect and picture that I liked was when it talks about how Hyde likes himself when he sees himself in the mirror, which shows how the evil is taking over, especially when we see his malicious pleasures come to life when he kills the woman and leaves her lying on the ground covered in her blood. Which in comparison to before he actually wanted to be with a woman and it is shown how much he does. I think anything changes just makes the novel look good, since it just emphasizes how strongly images can make such an amazing novel just like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The image i chose was the last one shown in the graphic Novel. I think this is the best way to end it since we see the pain in the face of Hyde. How empty he is now, since Jekyll has lost complete control and it is Hyde now. No longer Jekyll being able to suppress him. I think it is amazing how the image is conveyed and the detail that it gives off on how the feeling of pain is seen in the face. This image speaks for itself. I really lie it and it is my favorite out of the whole Graphic Novel.

Graphic Novel Response and Scene Description

There aren’t that many differences when it comes down to the novel and the Graphic novel of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One of the main is the difference between the drawings. The drawings in the graphic novel, well to me, add a feeling of actually being in the scene. When i read the novel the beginning where it talks about Mr. Hyde, it describes him yes, but when you read the graphic novel and it put a picture to the face. That is one of the differences I like the most, especially since I am not that much of a reader myself. I enjoy when something is in the form of a comic book. To me that is pretty much the only difference that I noticed. Besides how much suspense the graphic novel brings because the colors that it has. When you look at grey black and white, it just makes things seem creepy and eerie.  I think that the changes that it does have are very good, since it sticks to the main story, the fact of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It stays the same, no other characters are added and the plot of the story does not change which makes the novel and the graphic novel almost as good as each other. One of the things that made the novel so much better was one of the differences, which were the drawings. The drawings add an effect that just reading can, it shows you the images that are describe. But I think that if you do not read the book you wouldn’t understand the novel to an extent where the novel readers could pick out the details on a character like Jekyll, or Utterson. Looking throughout the book I think what adds the best feature to the graphic novel is the way that there are pictures that do not have any writing on them. They are just a picture I think that is what causes and invokes more of a suspenseful feeling, because it gives you the reader more of a chance to let you think of what will happen in this scene. Or it can also be a way that can make someone think hard about the scene and try to distinguish what is happening. It actually is such a good thing because the novel just tells you directly what to think and with the graphic novel, your mind can actually create something by just seeing the images portrayed.

The scene I chose was when Mr. Jekyll pins down the girl in the street. I see this image very powerful. It shows how Jekyll does not pity anyone or care who you are and this obviously shows how Jekyll really is. He is a cruel man, and this shows him off perfectly because he has her pinned in a corner, and she is a helpless girl, the way the author of the graphic novel drew the picture, invoked a sense of fear, to tell everyone who is reading the graphic novel that Jekyll does not care what so ever. The way the scene is set up also makes it that much more enticing. Since it is black and white, of course that adds the eerie effect and how he has his foot on her, makes it seem like he is in control. The picture is very well drawn and enhances the scene that is portrayed in the novel. Well at least in my perspective.

This article focuses on the sexual identity that is portrayed within the book. it can be argued to see if either Jekyll or Hyde's sexual orientation is put into questioning during this book.It actually comes well when you actually think about the characters.

Summaries for Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde chapters 8-10

In chapter 8 of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde it begin with Jekyll's butler going to meet Utterson and telling him that there had been some foul play on Dr. Jekyll's part. The Utterson goes to visit him and hears a voice in Jekyll's laboratory but it doesn't sound like Jekyll. The voice tells the butler he is not receiving visitors.Utterson and the butler continued talking and the butler told him how the mysterious voice would send him on errands. The man then comes up to get something but when they see him they notice the man has a disease that changes his voice and his facial features. The butler declares that the man looks like Mr. Hyde. Hearing this utterson wants to break into the lab, and hearing and recognizing Hyde's voice he orders the butler to bring it down. When they open they find Hyde's body on the floor with a vile in his hand, he had poisoned himself. then they find ome items for Utterson, the first is a will that replaces Hyde's name with uttersons the second is a note for Utterson that was up to date. This cause  confusion because he thought Hyde had died from suicide but maybe it could have been Jekyll. The third item was a sealed packet, and with that Utterson retreated to his home, but promised the butler he would be back.
In Chapter 9 Utterson goes home to read the note Lanyon left for him said he said Jekyll had sent him a letter after the first dinner party to break into Jekyll's house and go into the laboratory and to remove a drawer. So Lanyon went with a locksmith to open it. When they opened it, Lanyon found several vials, one containing what seemed to be salt and another holding a peculiar red liquid. The drawer also contained a notebook recording what seemed to be years of experiments, with little notations such as “double” or “total failure”. Then Hyde, as promised, appeared and showed Lanyon a medicine that was the cause of of Hyde being Jekyll and vice versa. Then he told lanyon that he was going to die even though it completely changed and helped his appearance.
In Chapter 10, Dr Jekyll explains what happened from his point of view. He claims that he always wantedto find a way to separate his good, public self from the side of him that wanted to be free todo whatever it wanted. He says that he used to be an ‘ordinary, secret sinner’, but when he found a way to separate his two sides he was able to indulge his desires as Mr Hyde.He claims that he was free of the responsibility of his actions. After Mr Hyde kills  Carew he manages to resist taking the potion, but eventually succumbs to temptation  and takes the potion again. Mr Hyde begins to take over Dr Jekyll he needs larger and larger doses of the potion in order to become Dr Jekyll again. Eventually the potion runs out and he is unable to make a new batch. Hyde kills himself maybe because he feared being hanged for the murder of Carew, although this is not entirely clear. By  the end of the letter Utterson understand that Dr. Jekyll will no longer be there since Hyde had taken over by becoming stronger without the potion.

"Men have before hired bravos to transact their crimes, while their own person and reputation sat under shelter."
I like this quote because it shows how things really are and how people are actually fearful to doing their own wrong doings.

" The bargain might appear unequal"
I like what this says because at this point Jekyll's bargain with Hyde is uneven since Hyde is taking control.

Can someone overcome the evil within?

What is what cause Hyde to beocme more powerful than Jekyll?

Since my main focus is Good and Evil this will go in perfectly. Mainly the message that it convey is if you practice evil, you will become it. And sadly that is the case, it will be useful for me since it will state the reason for evil being a choice within my essay.

Summaries for Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde chapters 5-7

Where we last left off in chapter 4 the search for Hyde began, and in Chapter 5 the search continued. Utterson is told by Mr. Jekyll that his relationship with Mr. Hyde has officially ended. He assures the police will not be able to find him as well. Mr. Jekyll then shows a letter to Utterson. The letter explains how Mr. Hyde is trying to escape and how Jekyll should not worry about him since he is not worthy of Jekyll's generosity. After reading Utterson takes into consideration and tells Jekyll that Hyde might have intended to murder him, be he got safely away. On his way out from Jekyll's place, Utterson runs into the butler and learns that there has not been any incoming mail. After that Utterson consults his clerk, an expert in handwriting, he tells Utterson that the writings are almost the same, just one slants the other way, This make Utterson think that Jekyll forged a letter for a murderer.
In Chapter 6 we begin to see that Jekyll is seemingly looking better and now helping in charities, the disappearance of the evil of Hyde presence has caused a good effect on Jekyll's life. Jekyll throws a party, but as soon as Lanyon and Utterson want to speak alone with him, the butler says Jekyll is not taking visitors, this continues for a week or so. Then Utterson visits lanyon only to find that he is going to die in a few weeks, but mainly does not want to talk about Jekyll, and tells Utterson that he will find the truth once he passes. Utterson writes to Jekyll explaining the issue at hand, Jekyll replies saying he still cares for them as dear friends, then continues saying he will be in seclusion since he is on punishment for a crime he cannot name. A few weeks later Lanyon dies, he looked in a safe and found a letter that Lanyon had for Utterson, but inside was another letter that was to be opened when Jekyll died.
In Chapter 7 the next week Utterson and Enfield are taking their regular stroll, passing the door where Enfield saw Hyde, they begin to talk about the murder, and how Hyde will never return to London. Enfield came to a conclusion that the laboratory and Jekyll's house are linked physically. When the men peep into the window they find Jekyll there and he says eh feels very low. Then men ask him if he would like to take their walk with them, he refuses. Then a look of terror strings up from Jekyll and he closes the window, both Utterson and Enfield leave in a frightened silence

"After i am dead, you might come to learn the right and wrong of this"
A lot of people have realizations once someone dies and understand the reason why something is the way it is.

" You seem pretty sure of him"
When don't we as people think we know someone so much, and even in books people seem to create the same mistake.

What happens when someone realizes they committed evil?

Why would someone cover an evil for someone who deserves to be punished? The concept of Love.

This article could help me because once of the topics on my essay for this sincei am trying to write an essay abou the good an evil in humanity and how it is not something that we are born with but with a path that we choose. And this article talks about the and we could see how Hyde decides to do evil even though he could be good.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde summaries

The book Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde starts of with Mr.Utterson a wealthy, London lawyer. Which is very well kept to himself. But whenever his friends do need him he is always there. One of his close friends is Mr.Enifield, he is a distant relative of Mr. Utterson. both of these men have very little in common, but on weekly basis they take a walk together. While on their walk they come across a building, it seems like it does not belong there. Then while there, Enfield tells Utterson a story about the house. Utterson, being curious asks many questions about what had happen, and his question are answered starting with the mans ugliness, but then Utterson states that he knows who the man is, but then they agree to never talk about it again.
In the second chapter it starts with Utterson studying a will from his friend Dr. Jekyll, it states to give al of his things to Mr. Edward Hyde.Later that night, Utterson is haunted by nightmares in which a faceless man runs down a small child and in which the same terrifying, faceless figure stands beside Jekyll’s bed and commands him to rise. Utterson began to spend time around the building where Enfield had seen Hyde go in, and wanted to catch a glimpse of Hyde. Utterson meets Hyde which is something very important. but when he does meet Hyde he has his head facing down but then Utterson asks to see it. When he does he see it, he is scared and apaled at how ugly it was. We find out that the rundown building is the laboratory of jekyll, even though it is frequently visited by Hyde.
In the Third chapter, Jekyll throws a party, Utterson decides to stay late just so Dr. Jekyll and him could speak. He tells him about Young Hyde and how he is learning about him. He tells him that the situation with Hyde is exceptional and cannot be solved. He then tells Utterson that his desire to provide for Hyde will continue, but yet he will carry out his will.
In Chapter Four after about a year it begins with a maid seeing a murder in the window , during the morning, she said that a small evil looking man who she recognized as Mr. Hyde. The police then find a letter on the body for Utterson and the call him. When they look for him, the police find the murder weapon and the burned remains of Hyde' s checkbook. The police find that Hyde's account in the bank is still open. When the investigation continues no one can give an accurate description of Hyde, even thouugh they had seen him.

"His friends were his own blood, or those who he had know for the longest."
I like this quote because it applies to me, it shows exactly the person that i am, i don't like making friends whom will be able to turn their backs on me, with no problem.

"My mind misgives me he is in deep waters."
I like this quote because it shows how he is struggling with this, and how he see that Mr. Jekyll is troubled at this point or well he thinks.

Is the whole story dedicated to the case involving Mr. Utterson?
Does the reason for Hyde being evil come to light? Good vs. Evil is is it something you are born with?

Application 143

1. The person in the poem moves his hands with the peace sign motion and also does other gestures with his fingers as well as the movement with his hands. Towards the end he raises his "Black Fist" which could be seen as the Black power slogan picture.

2. We learn that even though he cannot speak that he does what he has to do to get his point across, and still fights the cause by showing what the believes. He does what he does because of the issue of equality and that what he wants, he wants to get rid of apartheid. He gets put in Jail and its important to him because he has to fight against apartheid.

3.Well in a regular prison speaking is fine but yet people don't communicate the important things and gestures like the ones the man uses in south Africa, work perfectly to get his point across there. It makes everything more visual because hes showing what he talking about.

4. i feel that it is very strong represented with the hand gestures. It makes me feel like this man cares to get rid of apartheid and gives me a sense of happiness. Yes i have, when i see how people try so hard and don't care what the consequence is but they are trying to make something better, that brings happiness to me.

5.The hand of freedom. Since it mainly revolves around the mans hand and he wants to get rid of apartheid. Yes i do because it speaks about freedom which is what apartheid prevented.

Mans Nature is Good

The philosopher Mencius wrote the article of Man’s Nature is Good. It mainly talks about the capability of man and how if they chose to be good they can.  He talks about how we are born with the capability of being able to choose right from wrong and sometimes we do choose right while others decide to choose wrong. Which in some case that leads towards negativity. His belief in how humanity has good nature is something that I like. I see humanity as capable of being good natured. I have seen it happen certain people just decide to not be good. I honestly don’t consider myself as evil. I always have good intentions in what I do for myself and other people. But being evil make come to some as natural as being good comes to others and that is the sad part. One of my favorite quotes from this article is: “ We are by constitution , capable of being good.”. I like the way it is stated because it shows that we all, no matter who you are can be a person of good. Another quote was: “ In good years, young men are mostly fine. In bad years, they’re mostly cruel and violent.” I like this quote because it is true, when things are going good, but when they are not oh how hell breaks loose and we are not the people that were doing good anymore. Well in some cases, some regardless of the circumstance find a way to be good.

Man's Nature is Evil

Man’s nature is evil is based on a philosophe r, Hsun-tzu, that believe that human nature was unavoidably evil. He mainly talks about how men, are born with evil, the desire to be and the wanted to do evil. But throughout our life we should change and be, in a way molded into become a better person. He then goes on talking about how a man cannot change if not by the instruction of a teacher or a group. How could a man change if he has no instruction to show what is right from wrong. I think that tit is very true. If my parents wouldn’t have told me that stealing was bad I would have probably gotten in trouble for stealing, but since they told me I was wise enough to start from that. One of my favorite quotes from this passage had to be: “ It is man’s emotional nature to love profit and desire gain.” This is actually very true because as humans who doesn’t love money and who doesn’t enjoy gaining more and more of anything, well except of negative things. Another quote is : Man’s emotions, ,am’s emotions –they are very unlovely things indeed.” This quote is actually kind of calling people out and saying that our emotions don’t always consist of love, they can be very hateful at time. This article is very confusing to me but yet it is good, it makes very good points of how mans nature is evil.

Campus Space

The article Campus Space focuses on how important design can be to a certain area. It starts off with a student going to a college, to see if he would want to go there. The article talks about how his experience, on how things went and how things seen. From the campus to the offices, they are talked about how the design within each part plays a huge role. The article goes on talking about how space can influence the way that people think of a certain place or their feelings towards something. Most of what is talked about is how space affect the area you are in it could be in any way meaning physical or mental. Even when it is work related or any other type of leisure activity. The space you are in causes a difference in the way that it is made.
“The appearance of the campus is, by far the most influential characteristic during campus visits.
I like this quote and I definitely agree with it. That is why I chose CSUN. I saw the campus and I liked the feel it had to, I liked the view, the way the campus was laid out and the way the students were around the campus.
People move in a certain direction, sit at one end of a room, and exit a building in a predictable pattern presumably because the physical structure and design allows few other options.
I like this quote because it is true, I walk certain ways in a building because it is designed that way to lead you to certain areas, and go to certain areas that will you to other places.

A comic in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a place where comic books aren’t really seen. It would be kind of difficult to see a comic setting in L.A.  The way I see it, since there are a lot of residential areas in L.A then we would see a lot of the heroes’ actions within the community. I would say it would be 50/50 in downtown and more populated business areas, and in the community.  Also, most of the comic would portray the heroes overlooking the city from the Hollywood hills or maybe from the skyscrapers in downtown. Spatially represented this comic would be divided in both the downtown and the community and would have a lot of citizens and families involved.  The super Heroes’ would have to have a L.A look. Meaning a very muscular guy or very beautiful woman.  They would probably wear the colors that represent L.A meaning Purple and Yellow (Lakers) or blue and white (dodgers). This is quite obvious since these colors are really seen and supported in L.A. I think the costume for either would not have a cape he might be like Spiderman, or the X-men who don’t wear capes. I think they would mainly be like Batman; the super heroes would be vigilante. They would be heroes that the police wouldn’t want since it would cause destruction due to him having to save people or things. It would probably be the same story like Batman which the police want him caught but want him to still help which is something that would happen in Los Angeles. L.A would be quite a setting for a super hero’s comic book.

Comic Book Space

Comic Book Space talks about what it is titled, the space in which comic books are in.  It talks about how comics were born in New York with the writer Stan Lee being one of the most famous, with his comics of Marvel.  It talked about how most of the super heroes revolved somehow around New York City. Such heroes include The X-Men, The Fantastic 4, and the always spectacular Spiderman. When people do think of New York it is seen as a place that is made for comics since it is seen as a dark place in which your wildest dreams could come true. It has every type of person, so why wouldn’t super heroes be included in this mash up.  Regardless of what you are doing space matters a lot. Even when it comes down to super heroes a good setting just like new York is the central for comic books, it makes it that much more realistic and better for the fans.
“So clearly I was not bitten by a radioactive poet”
I like what is said because it is very comical; since most super heroes become something since in Spiderman’s case he was bitten by a radioactive snake.
“If you grow up in a city and see the city… you’ll get a city as it really is”
This is one of my favorite quotes from the entire article since it shows how important a place can actually be to something, and how much it actually affects what it is.

My Popular Place.

A popular place in my neighborhood is a place called Plaza Mexico. It is a place full of rich Mexican culture and very full of music and dancing and different things you would and could see in Mexico. It is very beautiful with its paintings; the towers and the structure of the place make it look so much like an actual place in Mexico. Most of the people that go there of course are of Hispanic culture, throughout the years I have seen it change from Hispanic families to African Americans to even Asian. I enjoy that about Plaza Mexico because it shows that it is diverse and wants more than just one culture there. It shows how inviting the place really is. Another really good aspect that this place has is the location; it is in the middle of a huge intersection so it is very noticeable. There are plenty of places to eat there including tio’s tacos, hometown buffet, subway, and many more. There are also clothing stores and small grocery stores within the building itself, it is very nice. Another very good aspect that Plaza Mexico has to offer is the live music that it has, it has Rancheras, and a lot of Mexican type music the best thing most of the time this music is live and is very good quality. However they do get radio stations to go play at their events or on the weekends to promote certain thing. Plaza Mexico has a rich culture to give out.

There are certain aspects of Plaza Mexico that should be changed. One of them could be the clowns; I know it might seem like something kids like, but a lot of the children there get freaked out by what the children see meaning the clowns. Most of the people there even though they are friendly they don’t have such a friendly face. Another aspect that I would change would be the restrooms. Making them more available in places that people didn’t have to go crazy to look for them would help out a lot. Something else that I would renovate would be the bathrooms, they are very old and really do need to be fixed or put in new ones. Other things that would need to be renovated would be the arcade the places to eat and the little shops, other than that I think that plaza Mexico is very good in what it does and makes sure to have a Mexican experience whenever you go since you always get a little bit of mexico. If not by the food, or the music or event he feel of the place.

Right To The City

The right to the city articles talks about the park near Berkley. It talks about how people make up what the park is from the children to the homeless. They want to change the place into a recreational center which is something that I liked very much since I love when people care about others future. Many people had different views on what should be done with the park since it was full of homeless people. They wanted to make it more of a place for children. It was argues on how the park should be made to help people out instead. Riots even broke out while this issue was argued and that was very sad to see. Like always proteststers did not agree with what was happening. The university had the final say and was transformed into a place where the university students can go and have their own recreational center.

"They know times are tough and they want to survive"
I like what is said here it is a great quote since it shows how students needed to do so many things to get what they wanted and they knew it was a "had to" situation.

"Peoples park as a central gathering and living space for the homeless."

I understand what they were saying by this since i lived by many parks where this occurred there were many homeless who lived at parks and most of the time scared the children away.

My ideal Place

My ideal work space would be one of the most relaxing yet most studious places I could have.  It would begin with a very well lit room. The main light in the morning/afternoons would come from a skylight at the top of the room, and windows all over the room they would be bay windows. The indoor lights would come from mainly from some very professional looking lamps around the room. They would mainly be black. The paint in the room would mainly consist of a forest green color with white at the top and bottom of the walls. The walls would consist of posters of band that I like and things pictures of family, my girlfriend and friends. Then the floors would be a dark shade of wood which would give the room a rustic look. Finally the work area would consist of a black desk that is very big with a lot of cubbies great for storage. Then of course I would have a lazy boy as my chair so when I would want to sleep, I have my chair ready for me to sleep. My desk would have the essentials like high lighters, pens, pencils and of course a Mac desktop computer.  The last thing that I would have would be a surround system all over the room. So I could listen to all of my music while I am doing my work.
I chose the design I did for my place because I wanted a place that I could say it is how I desire and how I would want. I enjoy comfort and the color green, regardless of the shade, it makes me smile. I chose the windows that way because I like having a view when I work, since when I’m really busy I like to relax a bit and stare out the window. So the many windows would be a great thing to do. The floor I chose, well honestly I just like it since it pulled off the rustic look. I chose the computer and since it is one of the best computers out there. It is a MAC and that means no viruses and that will with future expenses with computer problems. The desk I chose well a huge desk that would help a lot since I know I am a messy person and like to have a lot of my papers and folders and books on my desk while I am doing my work. Also the storage compartments in the desk would be very helpful to put important papers that I don’t need at the moment, they would be very good for filing. One of the most important things that I thought of putting would be the surround sound system. Music is one of my favorite things in the world and would like to have it in my ideal workspace since it gets me into what I am doing at the moment. As you can see my ideal room has a reason for all of the things that I want.

My Study Place

My study space is in my dorm. I live at the CSUN dorms and I share a room with another person. My side consists of the bed my desk, a drawer, and cabinets. I usually do my homework on my desk since I have a chair to sit on and it is most convenient when I need a hard surface. I can honestly say I enjoy doing my homework there because it is the place I can concentrate the most since living in the freshman dorms is very loud and full of distractions.  One of my favorite things about my study space is how close it is to the fridge in my room. Whenever I am craving a snack or something I just reach in there and pull something out. Another aspect that I like about my study space is that I have a place to relax, meaning my bed. Everyone gets bored or tired while doing homework or studying for a test, so what’s better than having your bed there when you take a rest? One of my favorite parts of my study space is my wall. It has pictures of me and my girlfriend and of things that I like and letter that have been given to me.  It’s good in the sense that it motivates you to do things when you see all the things on your wall. I enjoy having all of these things in my wall.  The lighting in my room is actually really good, I have a light that shines directly above my desk which makes it easier to read and do my homework even while my roommate is asleep. Another one of the good things that my study space has to offer is the view I get when I look out the window, it looks directly into the mountains and to me that is such a good view especially on a sunny day. The most favorite thing I like about my study space I the fact that I can play any music that I want. I love music and especially when I have to do school work for some reason it helps me concentrate a lot more. One of the things I dislike about my study space is that my neighbors are very noisy. On either side of my room I have neighbors that like to play their music loudly, and that sometimes can become very distracting. Another thing I hate about my study place is that it is in the dorms. Since we all know that dorm rooms are not the most study appropriate places to study since you have so different distraction that will either make you procrastinate and/or not do your work. I can say that this has happened to me, I had become distracted with playing Black Ops that I forgot three math assignments were due and I didn't get them done on time. I turned them in late and got no credit. So it is easy to get distracted even in my study place. Over all I love my study place and I would not want to change it.

Intro/thesis

Social networking has become a part of everyday life. But in some cases it takes over of what and who you are. Losing your privacy online at a social networking site is one of the most common ways to lose who you are. Common sites just like Facebook, Twitter, tumblr are just a few of what are so common of an invasion of privacy. We see the invasion on our profile, or even cyber stalkers.  I believe the invasion of privacy due to social networking is such a big issue that is very negative towards our own persona, since it could lead to such horrid consequences.

The End to a New Beginning

The End to a New Beginning
In the times where humans were in charge, which was so long ago, things were good. Children could frolic in the streets adults could go out to dates to see the world and be able to enjoy everything they could. But now, sadly we are reduced to this, a lonely cave hiding from them.  Having to scavenge for our food and continuously be on the lookout is the life we lead now. My name is Dr. James Ryan. I am the cause for this, I created these machines to help humanity, but instead they became self-aware. It is a long story but I’ll start from the beginning since we have all the time in the world and nothing to do but wait.
In 2013 I introduced the first walking robot that could solve a problem in mere seconds. He became more like a friend to me, someone that could help me in any situation, form love to work. My wife soon became jealous because once I created him I neglected him and my children. I did not realize it until it was too late. The government was asking and asking for this technology, so soon enough these robots were all over, in our houses, in our buildings doing human jobs. This seemed like the robots were taking over the lives of human. The point was for them to make things easier for us. I still had the original and he was the best, however he started to show some type of emotions, mainly jealousy. One day I got home and my wife was angry that I hadn’t been home because of work; it had been over a week. So I decided to stay at home for a couple days, Sam, my robot, realized I hadn’t come to work and came to my house and saw I was enjoying time with my family. I’m guessing the fact he was becoming emotionally aware made him very jealous, and wanted me only to him. I came to work days later and Sam wasn’t there. I then received my family had been murdered.
When I got to my house my wife and children weren’t there, the police had only one suspect and he was apprehended, it was Sam. I cried my love and my children were gone from this world.
His name was cleared someway since some hair that Sam planted made the police direct their suspicions somewhere else.  I looked at Sam and all he said is Now you don’t have to worry about anyone but me. When I heard that I became scared and very distant. Once Sam realized that he started to create hate for me. Soon enough it was too much. Sam tried to kill me, while I was in my sleep but luckily I was able to escape. I was scared for my life so I asked for Sam’s arrest, when the police tried to apprehend him he attacked them. Then this is what started everything. Another robot in the street saw this and sparked something within him and made him follow Sam. Then more and more robots started to attack more people since they saw how they were able to overcome and give the orders instead of taking them due to fear. The robots were taking control and everyone became very scared. Everyone looked at me for an answer and that is all I worked on.
The answer never came when I started to find something the robots would come in and destroy my lab and kill my scientists. It was useless to try anything since they would find a reason to destroy it. Then Sam found me one day and said, Doctor all I want is t be your only friend and if I can’t have that then you are going to die, I am protecting you without me the other robots will kill you, so will you choose me or the human’s. I of course choose the humans and Sam walked away since then I haven’t seen him. But other robots have been after me.
This dragged on for years, it is now 2026 we have been in a machine and human war for 10 years now, we are reduced to live in this cave, but I’m scared that they will find us one day. Sam the ultimate creation that i made in my life is the downfall of humanity I am deeply saddened by this. All that is left is for me to find a way. I think I found it. Well I hope I did, this is my last chance…. No wait not this. The military is planning to drop an atomic bomb over the war zone; they are disregarding the lives of children and all of us. No I found a way I found a way, don’t do it….I am sorry….Those were the last words of Dr. James Ryan, after that apology the bomb was dropped and wiped out 97% of humanity, but won the war, but at what cost.  All that was left now was for the 3% to rebuild and start life all over again.
“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

The Experience Machine

The Experience Machine is an article about imagining if there was a machine that could give you any experience that you could desire. That is very amazing actually. It would be a brain stimulation that could make you feel like you were in a great novel or making a new friend or doing anything. It would all be done while floating in a tank. It would be like picking and choosing experiences from a large library of experiences. Even though you wouldn’t know that you are in the tank, you’ll think that it is actually happening. This would be very amazing but something that I would not want to do, because I want to be able to live my life and not have a machine do it for me.

“What else can matter to us, other than how our lives feel from the inside?”
This quote is very significant by the way that we all want o live our lives but the most important way to live our lives is through our own experiences and our feeling and we do thing on the inside like humans.
“Should you plug into this machine for life, programming your life experiences?”
This quote is significant since it tells you that you pretty much attaching yourself to the machine so that you can live and have experiences through there. I believe that is the incorrect way. I think no one should have to connect themselves to something like that, unless you are in a coma or something like that.

1) What made you write about a machine with these capabilities?
2) Would  you connect to this machine?

The Veldt

I really like the story of The Veldt. It has to do with a family whom invested in a smart house.  Inside the smart house there were so many machines that can pretty much do almost anything for someone.  There was also a room in the house called The Veldt, which recreated anything someone could dream of so this place was almost like a nursery which in fact is very good for the children. Which I thought was very amazing. Who wouldn’t want to have a room like that in their childhood? I know I would have. It would be so fun. I’m sure. Soon enough the kids enjoyed the room more and were punished from it and the kids just like any other kids in this world were throwing fits and being children about wanting it back.  When I read this story it was very entertaining seeing how a house could be so advance and that is how technology will pretty much end up. I don’t doubt it at all, since we see new advances each and every day from phones to appliances to even running equipment. My friend the other day had some addidas that are meant for running since the have a chip that will tell you how well you are doing and what you need to improve on. That was pretty fascinating to me. I just think technology itself has gone too far to the point where it will eventually run us at a certain point. Look at SIRI for example a self-learning machine it reminds me of the veldt since whatever you ask SIRI it provides an answer for you, just like the nursery room for the children whatever they thought it would come true for them. Which is something I find amazing since technology now pretty much is a thought away. Sometimes I worry and I think what will happen to the later generations, they will only know how to do things by machines and then what if machines fail one day how will they do things? This story is very interesting; I understand who wouldn’t want a house that is a “Smart House” but in the long run you must get it through your head that sometime that it will be wanted more than you sometimes and appreciated more as well.

QUESTIONS

1. What is the significance of the posters that
read: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU? Who is Big Brother?
The significance is dont do anything bad becasue big brother is watching you and he'll know if you did something. It is the whole Panopticon perspective.

2. Where do we see evidence of panopticism in the
novel?
We see it with the big brother poster becasue it is like he is folling you around while being in one spot.
3. What is the telescreen, how is it used and what
is its purpose?
Its a two way microphone/visual to see and tell people what to do.

4. What is the significance of the Party slogans: WAR
IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH?
It is pretty much propaganda trying to change the way people think so that they can only think the way the government  wants them to think.

5. Who are the Thought Police and what do they do?
The thought police are people who can see your thoughts while your thinking them.

6. What is the Two Minutes Hate and what is its
purpose?
It is a dreaded thing by the people who are caught by the thought police. It is like brainwashing.
7. Why does Winston begin writing in the diary?
Since that is the way that he can remember things that happened

8. How would you feel if you lived in this world?
I would not like it there would be way to many restrictions for me as a person.

9. In what ways is our world like this world?
Well this is like our world since the begining there is always someone watching us regardless, just like the big broither poster. And the government is always trying to monitor us and trying to tell us what to think but we have the freedom of choice which is the big difference.

10. Do you think it’s possible that our world could
become like this one in the future? In what ways?
I honestly dont think the world could get like this, a lot would have to go wrong so that we all end up in a world like this. Like police men they're not always there but we are always cautious about them.

Bonus: What is Orwell’s purpose in writing this
novel?

Bonus II: What is totalitarianism?
it is the absolute control by the state or a governing branch of ahighly centralized institution.

Panopticon

When i read the article and graphic novels title i didnt know what it mean, it was pretty weird i had never heard that word before. I actually was intrigued by what it meant then the graphic novel spoke for itself and it was very intriguing at the same time. I understand how the internet is taken some times and it is very important not to see it  as a game . It is something very useful. When we see the internet we can see power and how interesting it is to people. But then we all know when we put to much of our information into certain parts we can have bad things happen to our life. For example money issues, we can hit bankruptcy with putting our credit/debit card numbers int he wrong websites and they will take over our identity starting with that bunch of numbers. Its quite dumb how the internet doesn't enforce such privacy. The privacy is what we need and sometimes i am scared to buy things online cause i don't know if i should be putting my information down.Sometimes people just have to be more cautious of what they are doing online. Since they're have been so many advancements in the internet we can be who ever we want and get away with it it might sound like a new life for some but for most its all just some game. Some people track others through internet connection and that's how accidents happen. These articles are very intriguing and they fascinated me with how people know how dangerous the internet can be and the still do what they regularly do.That is why i believe that internet usage should be used to its full potential, since its full potential can be the downfall of our lives in general.

Artificial Minds and humans being like Machines.

Well the articles of artificial minds and humans like machines are really good. They tell you how things are actually becoming now a days. They are true like in the article about humans being like machines states how images have become closer to looking like machines. Which is one of the most fascinating things i took from this article. Machines have taken over and will continue since technology keep on continuing as well. Its a shame since humanities potential without machinery can be so great. What happened to the times where machines weren't needed. It is contradictory i know since i am using a machine to write this but still its makes some sort of sense since this could be written with pencil. i liked what artificial minds said about machines being built to have minds just like humans do. Could the terminator movies be real who knows but as we see now technology keeps increasing and machines learn as they go for example "SIRI" on the Iphone. Clearly it shows an artificial mind. But who knows how far technology will increase just like artificial minds talked about the matrix that movie shows exactly how an artificial mind could work. Computers don't have minds that is correct but they way they are built sure makes it seem like they do. Don't you think? It honestly puts everything in perspective and it makes me think if i really want technology to keep increasing. These articles are very controversial in what they state yet they are very intresting to think about.

Surroagtes Questions

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a surrogate? The advantage is you do not have to deal with getting sick on any type of virus that will cause harm to you and it is safer than being in person. The disadvantage is that you lose connection with reality and all you wanna be is your surrogate.

Would you want to try a  surroagte?
NO i would not because im sure just like everyone else iw ould be consumed by the want of wanting the surrogate over reality.

In the film, it says that 98 percent o fth epopulation uses surrogates. Why would society be eager to be somone else--someone beautiful and perfect? What does this say about our society?
Our society looks to be the best, so if they could change their imperfection im sure it would change. It pretty much says how much vanity there is in our society .

Iin the film the company VSI's slogan is: "Life... Only Better."If you expierience something via a surrogate--is it real? Is the expierience better?
It is real since you are making it all happen with you thoughts. I do not think that this expierience is better i just think it is safer than actually living life.

"The loss of the Real" summary and quotes

This excerpt talks about how reality has been taken over  by  technology. Which is something that is very understandable and believable. I see it everyday. I am sure all my friends could say the same. Just like one of the girls that was interviewed talked about how she used to talk on the phone with her friends as an intimate thing. Now a days we see how people would rather talk through instant messaging or through other technological advance. I agree that both the technological and real world should be together but yet it is way too complicated for our society to balance it.

"why must virtuality and real life compete- why cant we have both"
It is a question that anyone could ask themselves, and i don't think anybody could actually answer it correctly. But in my point of view it just cant happen because some people are better when they are not faced with true reality.

"We build our ideas about what is real and what is natural with the cultural materials available"
This is a very strong quote but yet hard to explain, We need reality, it states it clearly right here. We need it since it  helps us as society build us and grow stronger as well as build it up.

What were your experiences with the loss of the real?
Has it affected your life at all?

Summary on "Society is dead, we have retreated into the iWorld" quotes and questions

“Society is dead, We have retreated into the iworld” by Andrew Sullivan talks about how the apple products have taken control of his life. He compares church to and an apple store and makes the clerics seem like the priests waiting in their confessionals. He uses colorful examples to state how technology has taken over our lives pretty much in general which is true. He admits how he himself was addicted to the iPod and the apple products, but yet the dislike he had for the way that technology has had on society itself.
“Now I have iTunes in my iMac for my iPod in my iWorld”
This quote is significant because I had many of my friends like this. I am not a Mac person but my friends were consumed entirely in the apple world. I had seen my friends with their iPhones and iPods and Mac’s they were completely let go into all those things.
“Society without the social”
This is applicable  to life itself since people now a-days do everything online now and rather live their life through a screen or a little electronic device that plays music for them, than rather go out into the real world and live things for themselves and have their own real experiences.
Where you able to escape your addiction to the iWorld?
What was the biggest motivation for writing this article?

24 hours without Facebook:/

For the last 24 hours I chose not to use my Facebook. It was actually a pretty hard task since I don’t just use it for the hell of it. I actually needed it to see if people had a certain book that I needed. But yes today I wanted to use it for social reasons but I guess texting had to do. The funny thing half of the people on Facebook I really don’t talk to. But the people I do talk to, I don’t have some of their numbers so it was hard to talk to certain people. Who knows how many notifications I have maybe ten maybe twenty, I’m kidding I maybe have like 2, if anything but still. I miss Facebook its addicting I guess sometimes I play bejeweled on it or words with friends, and that takes up the moments when I’m bored sitting in my dorm. I didn’t think that Facebook was actually important to my everyday life. But I guess nowadays technology is very important to not just youth now-a-days but it’s important from the youngest to the old person. I think it is one of the worst things in our society now, since we are so attached to either our phones or Facebook or iPods or just technology in general it is what runs our life. But back to main topic Facebook, I actually want to log on since I’m really bored at the moment and I need something to do bejeweled … I feel it calling me, well I’m off for now.
